I used to just go for regular 87 but I found that if the engine was really hot from a longer ride (> 30 minutes) the engine would knock when climbing up steep hills.
I now use the highest octane at the pump: usually 93 locally, though sometimes I find 95. The bike runs great with no knocking. It is about 10-15% more to buy but gasoline is so cheap in North America, who cares?
